Assalaam-u-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh I have this question that has been bugging me for quite a time. Is it okay to be a midwife? I mean, to be a midwife, one has to study (in non-Muslim countries) with both men and women, and has to see naked women giving birth...So can you please enlighten me on this topic? Jazakumullahu Khairan Wassalaam...
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
There is absolutely no harm if some of the believing women choose to study the science of being a mid-wife. In fact, some scholars in Islam have termed such knowledge (eg. A midwife) which is beneficial and helpful to the Ummah, as a ‘fard-kifaayah’ (obligatory for at least some women in the Ummah to have this knowledge).
What this term ‘fard-kifaayah’ means is that it is obligatory that at least some believers (women in the case of being a mid-wife) in the Ummah have this knowledge; and if no one in the Muslim Ummah has this knowledge, the whole Ummah will be held accountable in the Court of Allah.
There is absolutely no harm, and in fact it is encouraged that some of the believing woman learn this science of being a mid-wife, so that the other believing woman will be able to use their help and services at the time of their child-birth, and would not need to go to a non-believer for such issues.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
Your brother and well wisher in Islam,
