Zakat on stolen gold

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Aasalam O Alaikum Dear Sir, I want to ask question about Zakat. I have gold of about 35 tolas and zakat is due on me. I do not have much income to pay zakat so I participated in the 'CUMMATI' so that I will pay when this is my turn of Cummati. Recently I have been robbed by Robbers (at gun point) and they took 8 tolas of gold. My question is 'Will I have to pay zakat now as the loss is of about 4.5 Lacs and my total zakat was about 50 thousand rupees only'?

Answer:

Zakat

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Brother you will have to pay zakat on the amount of gold you possess after the robbery at 2.5% of the market value. If you do not have the money to pay the zakat, then it would be best if you sell part of your gold to cover the zakat amount and give the zakat dues.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is only ones. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
