What does Bohra mean?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I have recently been receiving your lessons on a daily basis. These are good lessons, which are perfectly aligned with Quran and the teachings of Mohammed(saws). But what I am confused upon is the title of your forum. Can you plz explain to me about Bohra, and what exactly does this mean? Is it another sect within Islam, if so how are you different from the mainstream Sunnites? Just a curiosity?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

What does Bohra mean?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and who-ever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

May Allah bless you for realizing and confirming that we are perfectly aligned to the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of our beloved Prophet Mohamed (saws). That is our goal, and we shall strive to stay on the guidance received from the Quran and from the Prophet (saws).

Bohras are a business community with its predominant base in the west-coast state of Gujarat in India. Dawoodi Bohras are a sect of the Fatimid Shia school of thought and about one million people claim to follow this sect of Islam all over the world.

The brothers who started this site were born Dawoodi Bohras, but at various stages of their lives, Allah guided them to read and understand the message of the Holy Quran. This made them realize the innovations (bid’a) that had been introduced by the leaders of this Dawoodi Bohra sect over the years. And our simple mission is to simply invite all our Dawoodi Bohra brothers to read and understand the message of the Lord of the Words from His revealed Book, the Al-Quran. Once they have understood the message of the Holy Quran, they are free to choose whether to believe in what the Quran is guiding towards, or stay on the path as directed by the Dawoodi Bohra clergy. With the knowledge and Noor of the Holy Quran, we are confident that the brothers should be able to clearly see the difference between guidance and error, Insha Allah.

There is Only One Creator, Who created everything in the heavens and the earth and everything in between, and we are commanded in the Holy Quran to worship Him Alone.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 11 Surah Hud verse 61: “O my people! Worship Allah Alone. You have no other deity other than He.”

Whoever believes and worships Allah Alone, without associating any partners, and believes and follows Allah’s Messenger Mohamed (saws) is a Muslim. The Muslims worldwide are brothers to one another and one community and one ummah.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 23 Surah Mu’minoon verse 52-54: And you all belong to one and the same ummah, and I am your Lord; so fear Me Alone!

We want to follow the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet (saws). All the sects of Islam that exist today were created after the death of the Prophet (saws). Creating sects in Islam is against the direct commandment of the above aayah of the Holy Quran, and Allah Subhanah will hold the people accountable on the Day of Judgement, for breaking this Islamic Ummah into various sects.

We, as true muslims, claim to be from no sects whatsoever. We are muslims, just us our Prophet Mohamed (saws) was a muslim. There is nobody who can claim that Prophet Mohamed (saws) was a Sunni, a Shia, a Ismaili, a Hanafi, a Malki, a Dawoodi Bohra, or anything else. The Messenger of Allah (saws) was a muslim and we want to follow the exact same deen that he (saws) followed. His (saws) life was based on the principles of the Holy Quran and he (saws) implemented every word of guidance from the Holy Quran in his (saws) own life. That is the deen of Islam we want to follow. We are on the deen that was followed by the Messenger of Allah (saws), so if (saws) he was a Shia, we are Shias! If he (saw) was a Sunni we are Sunnis! If he (saws) was a Dawoodi Bohra, we are Dawoodi Bohras!!

May Allah guide the Muslim Ummah to come out of the mentality of dividing Islam into sects. May Allah guide the Muslim Ummah to become One Ummah, as commanded in the Holy Quran. May Allah guide you and us all to the Siraat al Mustaqeem (Straight Path), that leads to His Mercy and Forgiveness, and keep us far away from all the other paths, each of which lead to the Fire of Hell. Ameen.

Allah Alone knows Best, and He is the Only Source of Strength.

May Allah keep you and your families and all of us in His Mercy and Protection.

May Allah guide you and us all to the Siraat al-Mustaqeem

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
